Hyderabad Contingent 5th Battalion a very fine and rare Field Officer’s full dress 1868 pattern scarlet tunic, the blue facings embellished with gold lace indicative of a Major, correct single Bath star rank badges to the collar, the gilt buttons with central crown and ornate scroll Hyderabad Contingent; the officer’s 1857 pattern forage cap of blue cloth gold lace decoration to the crown and a deep band of gold lace around the side, the horizontal peak inlaid with a Field Officer’s gold wire decoration complete with narrow leather shin strap, retailed by Jones & Co 6 Regent St Pall Mall London, the sweatband with ink inscription ‘J Woodcock’; a levee pattern crimson and gold lace sash, the whole in near mint state (3) £400-500

John Woodcock entered the Madras European Regiment as Ensign on 1 March 1847. He served in the Burmese war of 1852-53 (Medal with clasp for Pegu) and transferred to the Hyderabad Contingent in December 1855, subsequently becoming Commandant of the 5th Infantry Hyderabad Contingent. He retired in the rank of Colonel on 6 January 1875.
