Fitzroy William Fremantle entered the Army as an Ensign in the Rifle Brigade in 1854 and was promoted Lieutenant later the same year. He served with distinction in the Crimea War from November 1854 to June 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol, commanding 163 men at the last sortie of the Russians against the Quarries on 7-8.6.1855 and commanded the Woolsack party of the Light Division at the attack upon the Redan on 18.6.1855 when he was severely wounded. For his services he was awarded the Sardinian Medal of Valour. Advanced to Captain by purchase in 1857, he served in the Indian Mutiny, being present at the capture of Lucknow, the Trans-Gogra campaign and was with the expedition to Nepal, for which he was mentioned in despatches. Transferring to the Coldstream Guards in 1861, he gained the rank of Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel by purchase in 1870 and was promoted Major and Colonel in 1881. He held the post of Assistant Military Secretary of Canada between 1878 and 1883 and was created a C.B. in 1887. He attained the rank of Major-General in 1892.
