The first attributed to Lieutenant T. A. Butler, 1st Bengal European Fusiliers (London Gazette 6.5.1859). This officer was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 9.3.1858 at Lucknow, when, in order to ascertain the enemy’s position and inform his superiors, he volunteered to swim across the River Goomtee and mounting a parapet on the other side, remained there for a considerable time, exposed to the enemy’s fire until a relieving force arrived.
