Robert Edward Clegg enlisted in the Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve in September 1914, and following additional service in the 1st South African Rifles, was commissioned into the South African Service Corps in August 1915. As verified by Clegg’s service record, he was also mentioned in despatches for ‘excellent services’ between December 1917 and July 1918.
