D.C.M. London Gazette 17 September 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Private Ashton led his section of bombers to their objective. Later in the day, when forced to withdraw, he noticed another N.C.O. had been wounded while carrying his gun to the rear. He at once picked up the gun and carried both the gun and the N.C.O. to the rear position thereby preventing both from falling into enemy hands. Throughout the whole of the engagement he set a magnificent example of initiative and gallantry.’
