John McKinnell was born at Dumfries on 27 April 1833, and was educated at Edinburgh University. He served in H.M.S. Orion in the Baltic, 1854-55, as an Acting Apprentice Surgeon but was invalided in August 1855. His application to be re-admitted to the Royal Navy in 1858 was turned down. In April 1858 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the Staff, thence to the 73rd Foot in June the same year, and served in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, before returning to the Staff in May 1861. He was placed on Half Pay in June 1863, and died on 9 October 1869.
