Charles Henry Yates was born in Liverhedge, Yorkshire, in 1891 and attested for the 4th (Militia) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, on 7 October 1898. Embodied on 11 December 1899, he served with the 4th Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and was disembodied on 25 March 1902. He was discharged. ‘time expired’, on 6 October 1904, after 6 years’ service.
