Royal North Devon Mounted Rifles Officer’s Mess Jacket and Waistcoat c. 1856 - 1868, the jacket of scarlet cloth with blue facings decorated with silver lace around the collar, down the front, on the cuffs and around the bottom, single twist silver Orris chord shoulder straps retained by silver plated unit buttons these with raised St. Edward’s crown over crossed rifle and sabre (by Jennens & Co., London); the mess waistcoat again of scarlet cloth decorated all round with silver lace. Together with four very scarce manuals being “Tracts...as a Means of National Defence by a Free Militia”, 2nd Edition London 1781; “Rules and Regulations for the Sword Exercise of the Cavalry” London 1796; “Yeomanry Regulations etc.,” London 1853, originally issued in 1834; “Regulations for the Instruction, Formations, and Movements of the Cavalry” London 1860; “The Cape of Good Hope Calendar and Agriculturists Guide” compiled by G.Ross with a correct map of the Colony, London 1819. All five volumes with original hard back covers, some moth damage to the mess jacket and surface moth damage to the mess waistcoat otherwise good overall condition (7) £160-£260
The North Devon Mounted Rifles were formed in 1853 and granted the title Royal in 1856, in 1868 the regiment became the Royal North Devon Hussars.
