Boyd Dempster was born in Connor, Co. Antrim in 1839 and attested for the 77th East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot at Ballymend, Co. Antrim, on 27 February 1858. He was promoted Corporal on 4 May 1865, Sergeant on 27 May 1866, and Quarter Master Sergeant on 7 August 1872, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, in April 1876. He was discharged on 25 March 1879, after 21 years and 28 days’ service.
