Henry Blake was born in Farnham, Surrey, in 1851, and attested for the Royal Engineers at Rochester, Kent, on 10 July 1880, having previously served for 9 years and 3 months in the Royal Horse Artillery. He was promoted Corporal on 1 May 1883, Sergeant on 1 March 1888, and Company Sergeant Major on 1 October 1893, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1896. He was discharged at Chatham on 2 December 1901, after 30 years and 237 days’ service.
