D.C.M. London Gazette 21 October 1918:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the period under review this N.C.O. has always displayed great courage and cool determination under fire in the line, and has set a fine example of unfailing devotion to duty to the men of the battery.’
Walter Hedges was native of Irlams o’ th’ Height, Salford. He initially served during the Great War with the 2/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers in the French theatre of war (entitled to BWM and VM). Hedges advanced to Warrant Officer Class I, and was attached for service with the 197th Light Trench Mortar Battery for the award of the D.C.M.
