Joseph Kane was born in Dundee on 26 April 1865, and joined the Royal Navy on 13 September 1886. He served in H.M.S. St. George from 25 October 1894 to 11 May 1897, and was advanced Acting Chief Stoker on 6 April 1897. He was shore pensioned on 12 September 1898, and subsequently joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth the following day. He saw active service in the Mediterranean in H.M.S. St. George, the same ship in which he had served in East and West Africa twenty years previously, and was demobilised on 25 March 1919.
