M.C. London Gazette 2 December 1918:
‘During seven days’ hard fighting he handled the platoon of which he was in command with great skill and initiative, displaying a gallantry under heavy fire which set a splendid example to his men. The resolution with which he defended his positions naturally contributed to the final repulse of the enemy.’
Alfred Fairmann was born in Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1896, the son of Alfred Gladstone and Jane Ann Fairmann. He attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 November 1915. He appears on both his medal index card and the campaign medal rolls as serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers although his M.C. citation is for gallantry while serving with the 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
