The Reverend Francis William Saunders was born on 1 August 1881 in Kingarth on the Isle of Bute. He was the son of John, a Minister, and Katherine Evans Saunders. He was educated at Rothesay Academy, Isle of Bute, and at the University of Glasgow where he was awarded a Master of Arts in 1902 and a Bachelor of Divinity in 1905. He studied a number of subjects including Latin, Greek, Moral Philosophy, Maths, English, Divinity, Church History and Biblical Criticism. He was awarded several class prizes for his studies pertaining to his Bachelor of Divinity. After graduating in 1905 he went on to become the minister of Anworth Parish Church. In 1908 he married Miss Janet Cochrane Meikllejohn. He served during the Great War as a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 1 August 1918, aged 37. He is buried in Oulchy-le-Chateau Churchyard, France, and is also commemorated on the Anworth Parish Church Memorial, and on the Church of Scotland Ministers Memorial in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.

J. B. Meiklejohn served during the Great War with the Canadian Engineers, and was presumably the brother-in-law (?) of Francis William Saunders.

Thomas Grainger attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and served with the 1st/8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 May 1915. He was killed in action just over three weeks later, whilst serving with the 51st Division at the Battle of Festubert, on 23 May 1915, and is buried in Rue-Des-Berceaux Military Cemetery, France.

Robert Robertson attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and served with the 1st/8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 20 September 1917, aged 37. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
