Algernon Charles Murray was born in February 1887, and commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders in October 1906. He served with the 1st Battalion on the North West Frontier, and advanced to Lieutenant in June 1911. Murray initially served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion in the French theatre of war from 12 October 1914. He subsequently advanced to Captain, and transferred to the 2nd Battalion.
