M.M. London Gazette 21 August 1917.
Frederick Charles Simkin was born in 1888 at Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk. He attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1906 and served with them in Aden between 1910 and 1912, after which his battalion returned to England. He subsequently served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914. Later transferring to the 6th Battalion, he was awarded the Military Medal in 1917. His M.M. index card schedule number indicates this was an award for June 1917, and was therefore almost certainly for the attack at Messines Ridge on 7 June 1917, as this was the 6th Battalion’s only major engagement between January and August 1917. He lived with his family in Norfolk after the war and died there in 1962.
