An unusual Great War double-issue Mesopotamia D.C.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant P. W. Clewlow, Indian Unattached List, late 14th Hussars

D.C.M. London Gazette 29 August 1917:

‘5423 Private P. W. Clewlow, I.U. List, late 14th Hussars.

For gallant and distinguished service. In command of a cable waggon detachment he has laid his lines under heavy fire and shown great devotion to duty.’

The D.C.M. is one of 12 awarded to the Indian Unattached List.

Percy William Clewlow was born in 1890 and served before the war with the 6th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, from August 1908 to February 1910. He enlisted at Stafford into the Hussars of the Line on 7 February 1910, and was posted to the 20th Hussars, serving in Ireland and England until 10 October 1911, when he transferred to the 14th Hussars in India. He served with 7th (Meerut) Divisional Signals in Mesopotamia from 7 August 1916 to 14 July 1918, and thereafter remained in India with the Royal Signals until returning home to England and discharge on 8 April 1931.

Sold with original Regular Army Certificate of Discharge (Army Form B.108), Indian Gun License issued on 5 June 1924, and a group photograph of N.C.Os. including Sergeant Clewlow wearing his medals. All medals and clasps confirmed, his medal index card also noting issue of replacement D.C.M.
