D.S.C. London Gazette 11 August 1917: ‘In recognition of zeal, devotion to duty and gallantry whilst serving in River Steamers for long periods during the operations in Mesopotamia.’

Charles Jacomb Nicoll was born on 16 February 1889. He was appointed Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Indian Marine on 25 February 1911; Lieutenant, 25 February 1915; Lieutenant-Commander 23 June 1922. Served on Arms Traffic Operations, Persian Gulf (Medal with clasp). The War 1914-18 (Despatches. Awarded the D.S.C., 1917). Appointed to command of Cornwallis 10 October 1923; Temporary Commander, 23 July 1928, while officiating as Deputy Conservator of Port, Madras; Commander, 21 October 1932; Temporary Captain, 1 June 1937, while officiating as Captain Superintendent of H.M. Indian Naval Dockyard, Bombay; Captain, 15 January 1938; shown as Captain R.I.N. in the Navy List June 1944; entitled to Defence and War Medals. Sold with named certificates for Jubilee and Coronation medals from Viceregal Lodge, Simla. Captain Nicoll died at Battle, Sussex, on 29 January 1960.
