George Selden Simpson was born in 1878 and educated at Kelvinside Academy, Glasgow. He served in the Great War with the Royal Field Artillery in Gallipoli from 3 June 1915, and afterwards in Egypt, Palestine and France. After the war he was commissioner for Income Tax for Stirlingshire, and chairman, West of Scotland Area for the National Association for Employment of regular Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen, 1922-45; president of the Insurance and Actuarial Society of Glasgow 1922; formerly member of the executive committee, Western Infirmary, Erskine Hospital and B.R.C.S.; Colonel of Glasgow Home Guard, 1940-44; chairman of Glasgow T.A. and A.F. Association, 1943-45; Deputy Lieutenant for Glasgow 1939; Justice of the Peace for Stirlingshire 1936.
