Four: Gunner R. H. Glass, Royal Artillery, who died of wounds whilst serving with the 78th (Lowland) Field Regiment during the Anzio breakout, 1 March 1944

Robert Henry Glass was born in Bristol. He first enlisted into the Royal Artillery in October 1927, but was discharged to Class ‘B’ Reserve three years later. He was recalled at the beginning of the Second World War and served with the 78th (Lowland) Field Regiment. This unit was first in action during the Second Battle of El Alamein and also took part in the Tunisian campaign. Glass and his unit were involved in the invasion of Sicily as well as the fighting around the Garigliano River crossings. During the Anzio campaign the 78th Field Regiment was firing in support of the 1st Infantry Division and saw heavy action. Glass was mortally wounded at this time and died on 1 March 1944. He is buried in Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio, Italy.
