Charles Neville Jones was born in Liverpool on 6 July 1897, the son of a shipping clerk, and served during the Great War in both the Lancashire Fusiliers and the Mercantile Marine- given his date of birth, and his father’s profession, it is likely that he served initially with the Mercantile Marine, before joining the Lancashire Fusiliers some time in 1916.

Leonard Dawson was born in York on 22 November 1901, and joined the Royal Navy as a Sick Berth Attendant on 7 June 1920. He served initially at various shore based establishments, and at the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar, and as advanced Sick Berth Petty Officer on 2 March 1934. He joined H.M.S. Dryad on 10 November 1934, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 19 June 1935. He was promoted Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer on 1 November 1937, and served during the Second World War in the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Eagle (presumably entitled, therefore, to at least the 1939-45 Star), before being shore pensioned on 20 May 1942.
