Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Defence of Lucknow (Sirdar Peeroo, Lucknow Garison) naming officially re-engraved in running script, good very fine and scarce £400-500

Sirdar, or Sardar, is an honorific title used in both civilian and military contexts. It is probable that Sirdar Peeroo was a loyal civilian who served within the defensive perimeter of Lucknow during the siege. A large quantity of unnamed medals was sent to India for eventual distribution to civilians and loyal locals for their services during the mutiny. Most of these would have been named in the typical running script engraving. If Sirdar Peeroo had been on the establishment of a Bengal or Oudh military unit of any sort, the unit detail would almost certainly have been recorded on his medal.
