George Cautley was born at Moulsoe, Buckinghamshire, on 18 January 1809. Nominated a Cadet in 1824, he arrived in India in February 1826, where he was posted as a Cornet to the 8th Light Cavalry. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1829, and to Captain in July 1844, in which rank he fought at the battle of Ferozeshuhur in December 1845. He served throughout the Punjab campaign, including the skirmish near Ramnuggur and actions of Sadoolapore, Chilianwala and Goojerat, and received the brevet of Major. He was promoted to the brevet rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1854 and transferred to the 5th Light Cavalry in 1858, after the disarming and disbandment of his regiment at Meean Meer. Promoted to brevet Colonel in November 1859, he retired, with the honorary rank of Major-General, in December 1861. Major-General George Cautley died at Jersey Lodge, Herne Hill, Surrey, on 1 October 1881.
