Created G.C.V.O. on 9 November 1905, as Permanent Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Ambassador at St Petersburg. Hardinge had previously been appointed C.V.O. on 15 April 1903, for his services as Minister Plenipotentiary in attendance on the King during His Majesty’s visit to Portugal, Italy, France and the Mediterranean; and K.C.V.O. on 10 May 1904, on the occasion of his appointment as His Majesty’s Ambassador at St Petersburg. Sold with copies of the warrants for all three appointments.
