Three: Captain C. L. Pennefather, Rifle Brigade

Charles Lewis Pennefather, the son of Brevet Major William Vaughton Pennefather (see lot 990), was born at Pembroke Dock in 1894. He entered the Royal Military College in 1912. In the Great War, he was gazetted on 15th August 1914 and served overseas in France during November that year. Whilst serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd Rifle Brigade, he received a gunshot wound to the pelvis at Fromelles on 9th May 1915. After recovering he returned to active duty in France and, as a Captain with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on the 14th June 1916, aged 22 years. He was buried at the Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Sold with a quantity of copied papers relating to his service, wound and death.
