John Fitz Owen MacGrennan was a member of the Uncovenanted Service in Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. He took part in the defence of that city, at which time he was working in the Civil Dispensary. On the medal roll his occupation is shown as Clerk in the Chief Commissioner’s Office. His wife Dina was also present throughout the siege.

L. E. Ruutz Rees in his book records a dinner given at the Post Office by the Freemasons on St John’s Day with the ‘worshipful master, M’Grennan, presiding,’ and ‘appropriate speeches, of course, made thereon, especially by M’Grennan.’

MacGrennan died on 14 Spetmeber 1871, and his wife died on 13 November 1887. Both he and his wife were buried in the Residency Cemetery, as also was Dina’s mother, Eleanor Ewart.
