George Henry Barnard became a student in training at Nancy in 1882, for the Forest Department of India. He joined the Uncovenanted Civil Service, and in 1885 was appointed an Assistant Conservator, 3rd Class, of the Forestry Department in Burma, being posted to Moulmein. By January 1887 he had become an Assistant Conservator, 2nd Class, at Rangoon, and by July 1887 had been appointed an Assistant Commissioner, 4th Grade, Burma Commission, at Pyinmana.

On 11 March 1887, he accompanied as Civil Officer a party of the 27th Bombay Light Infantry (1st Belooch Regiment), under Captain A. C. Yate, that captured a bandit’s camp and took 11 guns. He was also out on other occasions in April 1887 with parties of Military when guns were captured.

Barnard was later at Fort Stedman and is last mentioned in the Indian Army List of 1891 as being stationed at Tigyaing.
