Robert Thomas Colpus was born in Poplar, Middlesex and enlisted at Warley, Essex. Serving with the 11th Battalion Essex Regiment, and having previously been wounded, he was killed in action in France, 15 October 1916, aged 21 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
