Andrew Smith, alias Martin Cargill was born in Glasgow and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders in 1892, aged 18 years. He served with the regiment in the Chitral campaign of 1895, the occupation of Crete in 1897 and the Nile expedition of 1898-99. In 1899 he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and served with them in South Africa from December 1899 to October 1902. Cargill was discharged in 1913 after completing his second period of engagement. In later life he was employed as a bank messenger; he died in 1943, aged 73 years. Sold with copied service papers and a copy of the death certificate.
