C. Richards was employed before the war with the Mediterranean Department of the Cunard Steamship Company, Cunard Buildings, Liverpool. He went to France with the original contingent of the 17th (1st Pals) Battalion, Liverpool Regiment on 7 November 1915. (See Cunard Steam Ship Company roll of men serving ‘Clerical Staff’ for a photograph of recipient.
The silver cap badge of the 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Batallion, Liverpool Regiment was presented to every man who enlisted prior to 16 October 1914. These battalions were formed at the behest of Lord Derby, and the badge comprising an eagle and child with the motto ‘Sans Changer’ was representative of his family crest.
