1854 pattern Scots Guards officer’s sword, blade 82cm by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London (No 54249) etched with GVR cypher, regimental badge, foliage, battle honours within scrolls to South Africa 1899-1902, owner’s initials within cartouche ‘W.A.B.’, steel guard with regimental device, fish-skin covered grip bound with silver wire, in its leather covered field service scabbard, blade heavily rust marked at point, guard pitted overall £150-200

Walter Alastair Boyd, son of Major W. C. Boyd, was educated at Wellington College.

M.C. London Gazette 14 November 1916: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded his battalion with great determination after his senior officers had become casualties in the advance. He displayed great coolness at a difficult time when the position was confused.’

Bar to M.C. London Gazette 2 December 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry during an attack, though wounded at an early stage and suffering much pain, he continued to lead his company and refused to go back to the aid post until ordered to by his C.O. He maintained direction in spite of a very thick mist and sent back valuable information.’
