Walter Ernest Hutson was born in Rochester, Kent in May 1898 and entered he Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer 5th Class in April 1918. Following service in the destroyer H.M.S. Sybille between June 1918 and February 1919, he was discharged ashore.
