Edward Stringer was born on 20 May 1910 in the Parish of Chester-le-Street in the County of Durham. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1926 and in his early years served aboard the battleship H.M.S.
Emperor of India and the battlecruiser H.M.S. Tiger. He gained the rank of Petty Officer in 1937 and Chief Petty Officer in 1943. Throughout the Second World War he served aboard the minesweeping sloop H.M.S. Franklin and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 27 February 1945) for the invasion operations of 1944. In 1946 he attained the rank of Chief Electrician and was Pensioned in 1950.
