The medal to Turner sold with 8 silver sports medals (unnamed), dating between 1932-33, four in boxes; the recipient’s Certified Copy of Attestation; Certificate of Service; Army Certificate of Education 2nd and 3rd Class Certificates; National Registration Identity Card; Certificate of Transfer to the Army Reserve; Durham Light Infantry Association Member’s Card and other original papers, cards and photographs.

Albert Edward Turner was born on 4 January 1909 in North Shields and was 18 years and 175 days old when he enlisted at Newcastle-upon-Tyne into the Durham Light Infantry on 28 June 1927. He had five brothers and one sister - who married the younger brother of Private Arthur Henighan (above). Turner served in India with the 2nd Battalion and was discharged to the Reserve on 20 January 1935 but was recalled on 6 September 1936 only to be transferred to the Reserve again on 1 December 1936. He was finally discharged on 27 June 1939. During the Second World War he was employed at Swan Hunter’s Shipyard.

Private Arthur Henighan served with the Durham Light Infantry, entering the French (?) theatre of war on 20 July 1915, a date suggesting he was with the 11th Battalion. His medal index card entry indicates later service with the Royal Engineers.
