D.S.M. London Gazette 29 September 1941: Leading Telegraphist Nelson George Wilfred Squires. ‘For courage, skill and devotion to duty in operations off the Libyan Coast.’ Seedies roll states that Squires was serving aboard H.M.S. Glasgow, and that this, and the other awards appearing in this gazette, was for services with the Inshore Squadron working with the Army off Egypt and Cyrenaica.

During April 1941, units of the Mediterranean Fleet were employed to cover and support the withdrawal of the British Eigth Army in Cyrenaica, between Tobruk and the Egyptian frontier.
