Important British and World Banknotes

The Bank commenced printing serial numbers on notes issued in 1808 with the sequence running from 1 to 99,999. There are no records available detailing the sequences completed during the period when Henry Hase was in office, but notes with serial numbers of less than two digits are very rarely seen and we believe this to be the only pre-20th century Bank of England note with serial no.1 in private hands
