Henry Smith served in the 21st Company, Royal Engineers. 21st Company was one of only 3 R.E. companies to serve in the Indian Mutiny, the first ever R.E. companies to serve in India since the Indian armies had their own Sappers & Miners which had been deployed in previous operations. Corporal Patrick Sleavin, of the 21st Coy., won the Victoria Cross at the capture of Jhansi.
