Samuel William Mathews was born at Thames Ditton, Surrey, on 28 November 1877, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 22 January 1894. He was promoted Able Seaman on 2 October 1898, and joined the Destroyer H.M.S. Humber on 7 August 1900, serving in her during the Boxer Rebellion. Promoted Leading Seaman on 20 June 1901, and Petty Officer 1st Class on 28 September 1902, whilst still serving in H.M.S. Humber, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 2 December 1910. Advanced Chief Petty Officer on 1 June 1917, towards the end of the Great War he served in the Q-Ship H.M.S. Gaillardia, and was slightly wounded when she was sunk on 22 March 1918. He was demobilised on 26 April 1919.
Approximately 103 medals, all without clasp, awarded to H.M.S. Humber.
