John Elliot Rogers was born in Emsworth, Hampshire, on 12 May 1880, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 24 September 1895. Posted to H.M.S. Orlando on 8 August 1899, he served during the Boxer Rebellion, and was promoted Able Seaman on 21 October 1900. He was advanced Petty Officer 1st Class on 11 March 1906, and joined H.M.S. Grafton on 9 April 1913, being awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 31 May of that year. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Excellent, and died of disease whilst on passage to England on 4 January 1916, whilst borne on the books of H.M.S. Victory. He is buried in Mazargues War Cemetery, Marseilles, France.
