James Russell served as an Able Seaman in H.M.S. Minden during the assistance given by the Royal Navy in the capture of the island of Java from July until the surrender on 18 September 1811; and as an Able Seaman in H.M.S. Beagle during the assistance given by the Royal Navy in the capture of St. Sebastian on 8 September 1813, when ship’s boats were employed in the inner blockade.
