The special theme of the 13th European Art Exhibition was the Order of St John in Malta.

Dr Enrico Mizzi (1885-1950), popularly known as Nerik Mizzi, was the son of Fortunato Mizzi, founder of the Maltese Nationalist movement. He was first elected to the Maltese Council as a member of the Comitato Patriottico in 1915. He formed his own political party in 1921 which later merged into what became the Partito Nazzjonalista, which he led from 1942-50, initially from Uganda, to where he had been deported because of his alleged Italian sympathies. His PN party won the September 1950 election and he became Prime Minister, only to die in office three months later
