Ernest Edward Pryce Jones was appointed a Commissioned Engineer in April 1941, while serving in the destroyer H.M.S. Sardonyx, which ship he had joined in July 1940. It was also for services in the same vessel on convoy escort duty that he was awarded his D.S.C., a decoration that he received at an investiture held on 28 September 1943.
Jones, who held the rank of Acting Lieutenant (E.) towards the end of the War, would appear to have witnessed further active service in H.M.S. Capricorn, but as yet no verification has been found for an M.I.D.
