A Roman gold finger ring, 3rd century AD., set with carnelian intaglio engraved with a helmeted standing figure of Mars holding a Gladius (sword) in his left hand, drapery in his right hand and a spear behind him, the intaglio set in raised oval bezel with rope flange, the shoulders angled with openwork crescent-shaped ends with involuted terminals, the solid tapering hoop D shaped in section, weight 8.49gm, internal diameter 17mm. £1,400-£1,800
