John William Beeson, a metal turner from Nottingham, was born on 16 June 1882. Enlisting in the Royal Navy on 14 January 1902, his Great War service included service in H.M.S. Attentive, and latterly in H.M.S. Caradoc, in which ship he was present at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight. He was promoted Stoker Petty Office on 1 May 1916, and he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 11 December 1917. He was shore pensioned on 13 November 1924, before joining the Royal Fleet Reserve.
