Percy Edward Joyce was born in Peckham, London, on 9 May 1897 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Impregnable on 23 January 1915. He served during the Great War primarily in H.M.S. Duncan from 20 July 1915 to 10 April 1917, and was advanced Leading Seaman on 1 September 1929. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 20 May 1930, and was shore pensioned on 8 May 1937. Recalled to the Service on 31 July 1939, he served throughout the Second World War, the majority of his service at the shore base H.M.S. Collingwood. He was finally demobilised on 15 September 1945.
