Frederick Thomas Abbott, who was born in Bristol on 13 April 1880, was a butcher in civilian life, before entering naval service in February 1901 as a Writer 3rd Class. He served during the Great War in H.M. Ships Cumberland (September 1913 - December 1914), Challanger (December 1914 - April 1915), Astrea (May 1915 - June 1916) and Vivid I (June 1916 - June 1919), and was Mentioned in Despatches in respect of operations in the Cameroons. He was pensioned to shore in June 1922, on the reduction of the service.
