Estimate: £150–£200

Aid Given by Great Britain to the Empress Maria Theresia, 1743, a large cast lead medal by L.M. Weber, bust right wearing a richly embroidered dress with Medusa head to front and ermine mantle, rev. Empress and her son seated amidst pile of trophies, together with Venus, Juno and Minerva, whilst Neptune points to the arrival of the British fleet, 81mm (MI II, 573/210). Very fine and very rare (£150-200)

Interestingly MI lists the medal from a lead example in its own [i.e. British Museum] collection, calling it ‘extremely rare’. Since publication in 1885 a number of bronze examples have been recorded, but even in lead it remains a rare medal. Illustration reduced
