William Clarence Caldicott was born in Poplar, London, on 17 May 1899 and commenced his naval service as a Boy 2nd Class on 5 March 1915. He was paid his war gratuity when serving in H.M.S. Osborne and his medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Excellent. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in July 1932, issued to H.M.S. Warspite.
