James Duckworth was born in Wigan, Lancashire, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury, Lancashire. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 August 1914, and was killed in action four days later, on 26 August 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
