Baronet’s Badge of the United Kingdom, 22 carat gold and enamels (Horder of Shaston 1923) hallmarked London 1929, with full neck cravat in badly damaged case of issue; together with a Presentation Key in silver-gilt and enamels, the reverse inscribed “Presented to Lord Horder, G.C.V.O., M.D., B.Sc. F.R.C.P., on the occasion of the opening of the Finsbury Health Centre. 21.10.38’, in fitted presentation case, nearly extremely fine (2) £800-1000

The Right Hon. Sir Thomas Jeeves Horder, first Baron Horder of Ashford, G.C.V.O., M.D., F.R.C.P., was born at Shaftsbury on 7 January 1871. His scientific and medical education took place at the University of London and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He graduated B.Sc. in 1893 and M.B. in 1898. In the following year he proceeded to the degree of M.D. and soon established himself in Harley Street. Quite early in his career he was called in to attend King Edward VIII. An acute diagnosis then greatly enhanced his rising reputation and began his long connection with the Royal Family which lasted for the rest of his life. He was, in addition, Physician in Ordinary to the Prince of Wales and, afterwards to King George VI. During the 1914-18 War he was a Captain in the R.A.M.C. He was knighted in 1918, and created Baronet (Horder of Shaston) in 1923, the year in which he was appointed medical adviser to the Prince of Wales. Created K.C.V.O. in 1935, he was advanced to G.C.V.O. in 1938, and he was raised to the Peerage in 1933. Lord Horder died on 13 August 1955, at the age of 84.
